PDF anonymization: why visual cover is not enough

Visual cover is useful for preview. True anonymization must remove or make original content inaccessible in the exported PDF.

When a user needs to hide an ID number, address, salary, or signature, they must know whether the document is only visually covered or truly redacted.

Covering in the editor

Covering is useful for quick document preparation, highlighting, or internal review. In preview, you see what will be covered.

But if the original text remains in the PDF layer under the cover, a technical recipient may be able to select or recover it.

True redaction

True anonymization must work with document content, not just an overlay. Sensitive text, metadata, or images must be removed or replaced so they cannot be recovered.

That is why it makes sense to keep PDF Redaction as a separate tool from the normal PDF editor.

Pre-send checklist

Before sending a redacted PDF, try searching original words, selecting text under the black block, and checking document metadata.

For high-risk documents, the export should be marked as redacted and kept with an audit trail.

FAQ
